Determine Your Skin Type

There are a variety of skin care products destined to suit different skin types, this is why determining each skin type is necessary. By knowing your skin type you will be able to give your skin exactly the attention it needs so your skin will look fabulous every moment.

Because there are a variety of skin care products on the market it is very important to determine your skin type. Different skin types require different treatments in order for the skin to look it's best. The benefits of proper skin care are known for many years this is why the cosmetic industry is constantly flowering and developing better, more improved cosmetic products.

What is the difference between skin care products?
Manufacturers base their products on certain ingredients which benefit certain skin types. The ingredients contained for example by skin care products destined for dry skin will not benefit oily complexions as dry skin needs more oil to moisturize the skin while an oily complexion already benefits from too much oil on the skin so applying an oily/greasy cream will only emphasize the oily characteristic of the skin.
Determining the exact type of skin is essential before purchasing any skin care products. The products usually have an inscription on the label which states for which type of skin the product is destined.

Basic skin types
There are 5 basic skin types determined by genetics. The skin type cannot be changed, at least until now nothing has been yet invented to help change skin types. Each skin type has certain characteristics which help people determine their complexion type.

  • Oily skin is characterized by a greasy surface of the skin especially after waking up. The greasy/oily surface of the skin is given by the sebum generated by the sebaceous glands which cover the skin. These glands produce a high quantity of sebum which will give the complexion a shiny look. This type of complexion is usually prone to acne and other skin problems as the excessive sebum can easily clog the pores.

Over cleaning this type of complexion will only stimulate the sebum production even more, so in order to deal with this type of skin choose skin care products and skin care treatments destined for oily skin.

  • Dry skin is characterized by excessive dryness and flakiness of the skin. Opposite to oily skin, dry skin doesn't produce a sufficient quantity of sebum to protect and moisturize the skin. Dry skin has an itchy and tight feeling especially after washing. Excessive dryness will aid flaking skin which has an unaesthetic look. Exfoliating the skin will help remove the dead skin cells after which an intense moisturizer should be applied. This will help nourish the skin and prevent dehydration.

  • Combination skin, just as the name states is composed out of two skin types as should be treated as having two skin types. The “T” are, which is the forehead and the nose area is characterized by oily skin, while the cheekbones are characterized by dry skin. People with this type of complexion should use products destined for combination skin or apply oily skin care products on the T zone and use dry skin products on the dry areas.

  • Normal skin can be considered one of the easiest complexions to deal with as this type of skin is completely balanced. Products destined for normal skin offer the best benefits for this type of complexion.

  • Sensitive skin is easy to determine as it tends to irritate easily after applying any products, especially products which contain fragrance. Avoiding alcohol based products is essential for sensitive skin. There are a variety of skin care products destined for sensitive skin that contain non irritant ingredients.
